Auchindrain Museum

Relive the Scotland of hundreds of years ago in this faboulous Museum located near Inveraray

Six miles from Inveraray Scotland, direction Lochilphead, both situated on the A83 that runs along Loch Fyne, you can find Auchindrain Museum. We had the first glimps of a few original historic cottages when travelling to Tarbert but missed the entrance completely. We decided to turn and visit this interesting place, only to find out that it was closed. It was after all 4 o'clock, a time where a lot of attractions close in Scotland, unfortunately. The lady that worked there noticed us and opened the gate for us, which we appreciated a lot.

The cottages themselves were closed but we had a wonderful time admiring all these picturesque cottages and walking over the historic grounds. The museum is set up as an original "farming village" with cottages, longhouses, barns and byres. The interior of the buildings are furnished with original artifacts and give a glimps of the lives of the people who once lived and worked at Auchindrain.

Walking the grounds is very interesting, old farming equipment can be found everywhere and small tracks lead to all the buildings on the grounds. One small comment though, the A83 runs just behind the grounds, and the fast driving cars and lorries disturb the peaceful feeling you have. Access for wheelchairs is not possible. Despite that we had a wonderful time and made some great pictures. During the opening season several special events are organised. Last admission to the museum is at 4pm daily. Adults pay an entrance fee of £4.50, children pay £2.20 (5-15 year). At the entrance of the museum is a small gift shop, with drinks and cakes. All in all we had a fine visit and it gave us a good impression how people lived and worked in earlier days. Written by Ron
